Day 1 and 2
Last night, around 5:40, we arrived at the church we're staying at. We're partnering with a ministry based here in NY (out of this church in Brooklyn, in fact!) called CSM (Center for Student Missions). We're here with a student group from a college in TN - compared to us they're huge! Anyways, each group has a CSM "host" that leads the group around each day. Kind of a mix between a tour guide and a helper to show you the ropes!
Our host is Ramona, a sweet girl (woman I suppose, but not too much older than us!) from Chicago. She took us to a Middle-Eastern restaurant last night and we were served interesting food...I had some lamb sandwich thing! We topped it off with some amazing baklava! Sooo tasty. I know my mom would be jealous :)
It was pretty much pouring on our little journey back! Have you ever seen Sex and the City 2? Remember the opening scene with the oh-so-glamorous Carrie Bradshaw stepping out of a cab and crossing the street in her little dress, wind blowing in her hair? That's kind of how I imagined my "grand entrance" in New York. Silly, I know. Ok now erase that picture from your mind. Now picture it dark, cold, me in so many layers I look like a purple marshmallow, and rain. LOTS of rain. A fairly miserable sight, but memorable to say the least! TV's not all it's cracked up to be, huh?
But no worries! I was ready to have a good time. After dinner, debriefing, a quick shower in those nasty stalls, and some unpacking, it was bedtime!
Before I knew it my phone alarm rang and it was time to get up to face the day. Morning devos, breakfast, and cleanup, then we headed out into the cold but dry streets! We did a prayer tour of ALL of NYC today learning facts about each stop and praying over the people there. We walked a total of 11 miles (not including distance traveled on the subway - which was a LOT!). We saw a lot of the "main sights" of the city including the Statue of Liberty (from a distance), different aspects of Harlem, Times Square, 5th Ave and all it's gloriously expensive stores, and even Ground Zero. We saw the construction of the Freedom Towers which is awesome! We had dinner at an Indian restaurant which has probably been my least favorite so far, haha!
It was a tiring day but I saw a lot and learned so much about this city! It almost feels like a different country. There's so many people and cultures that it's fairly overwhelming!
Well, I'm exhausted and off to bed before another longgg day tomorrow :)
