First Grade
Last semester I got to observe a wonderful Kindergarten class, and I fell absolutely in love with that age group! This semester I'm observing/teaching in a 1st grade class, and I'm even more in love with the thought of becoming a teacher! For my junior year the way is works is that I (and a partner) observe/teach in the same class, and we get to videotape and critique each other in our lessons. We go to the Elementary School every Tuesday (it alternates between the morning and afternoon), and twice during each semester we go Monday - Thursday from start to finish (also known as "Redirect Week!").
The school we go to is on the edge of Garner (a little bit of a drive...eek!), but the teacher I work with and the kids make up for it so much! I think the teacher my partner & I observe has the same kind of teaching personality that I will, which comes in handy when I see how she deals with certain situations.
Today I had my first informal, short lesson, and although I was nervous, it was a blast (of course). I picked a book to read along "When Sophie is Angry...Really, Really Angry," and throughout the book I would periodically stop, ask the kids to turn to a partner, and answer a question together (such as why is it hard to share? What do you feel like when you're angry? etc!). The assignment was supposed to be for a group of 4-6, but our teacher encouraged us to each do a "Turn and Talk" with the whole class! It was a great experience, and thankfully most students behaved! I think they were excited because it was the first time one of us (besides the teacher) taught. :)
Next week is redirect week, and we have to do a Numbers Knowledge (scripted) Test and an informal assessment of a student, and the following week each of us will teach a whole, real, live MATH lesson to the students! I am thrilled. I love first grade!
