What Are You?

Ok, I should be studying good ol' Biology...but I decided to take a little brain break!

I don't know why I thought to blog on this topic, but it's kind of been on my mind lately. I guess that's why I have a blog...to write what's on my mind:)

Anyways, I don't know about you guys, but when someone adds me on Facebook, I tend to go to their "Info" page and see what they put under "Religion." I don't know why, I guess I just like to see where people stand. Plus, what some people put on there can be interesting. About 80% of the time, it says "Christian." A lot of the times "Baptist" or "Methodist" or whatever is added to the end, which I think can be comical. But I diverge. I think it's funny, or maybe kind of sad, how most of the people who put "Christian" down don't act like "Christians." I feel that the term "Christian" is more of a label now than a religion, or rather, relationship. I don't know, maybe it was always just a "term" to slap on yourself, just like "Republican" or "Buddhist" is, too.

But then again, what makes a "Christian" a Christian? Everyone has differing opinions. Perhaps you may define a Christian as "someone who believes in God." Or you may go more in depth and say "someone who believes in God and that Jesus was crucified for our sins." Don't get me wrong, I agree with that statement and I believe it's fundamental to the "Christian" faith. But...is it enough to make you a Christian? Is asking Jesus/God/the Holy Spirit into your heart the end? So...you've been baptized. Is that it for you? You've done what it takes to get into heaven.

Instead of being labelled "Christian" I'd rather be labelled "follower of God." Christian is more of...a noun than an action. Just a name. But being a "follower of God" takes more action. I believe that's what God really wants - He wants us to pursue Him and follow after His heart. How do you do that? By getting to know Him! Reading your Bible, praying, going to church, meeting with a small group...for how can you follow someone you don't know? One of my favorite quotes is "To love someone is to see the face of God." In the Bible, God is love. I think that in order to tell people about God, the best way is to SHOW love first. To love EVERYONE. Even people you don't care for or even care about. Put everyone before yourself, do things for others that's out of your way, and I can guarantee you people will know you're different and that you're not only a "Christian" but a "Follower of Christ."

So what am I? Sadly, if you asked random people who know me, they'd probably say "Eh, yeah, I guess she's a Christian." If even that. I know I've failed at being a "follower of Christ" and I will continue to fail at showing His perfect love. But I know I can try and do better. And that's what I'm going to challenge you to do today. Ask yourself...what are you? And what can you do to change?

Now...back to Biology.

at least if people looked at you they could say "Christian" - sadly for a lot of people I never would have known if they hadn't put it in their Facebook info.
