The Beauty in Pain

Beautiful Things by Gungor is one of my new favorite songs. It was introduced to me on the car ride to the beach by one of my good friends and mentors, Pam! I love more and more everytime I hear it. It is simply beautiful.

Before you read any further...here's the link to the YouTube video! I know it's long, but it is so worth it. It's on my list of "If I was a dancer, I would totally choreograph to this song!"

Here's the lyrics so you can follow along :)

A little background on my day...I was texting my Nana during my Biology class (before you judge, I was working hard...to stay awake! Haha!), and she was telling me how she and my Papa have been serving at their church, and she has taken the lead of a DivorceCare group (she and my Grandpa have been divorced for several years). She said how important it was to use your past experiences and past mistakes to help others through their journey. I totally agree. It's part of the whole "community" I feel God wants us to be in with each other.

After class and walking back to my dorm, "Beautiful Things" came into my head. The jist of the song, in case you disregarded what I said and didn't listen to those wonderful lyrics (haha), is about how God makes beautiful things out of everything. At the very beginning of the song, the singer is talking about pain. We're humans. We all make mistakes. We all have pain. And sometimes, it seems like there's no hope at all. But I believe that God takes our pain and morphs it into something precious and beautiful. No matter what kind of pain it is. I'm beginning to wonder as I write this blogpost if there can be beauty without pain at all. The most beautiful things from this earth are a result of pain. Isn't that crazy?! God does this on a large AND small scale. This is one of the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen:

The story? That's my Uncle Johnny, a veteran of the US Military. He was flown from little old Nederland Texas several months ago to Washington DC as an honored veteran. A reporter took this photograph. This memorial wall is one of the most beautiful things...it honors those brave men and women who sacrificed themselves for our country. Veterans and other citizens can come and remember their friends and family that died alongside them many years ago. It's one of those "large scale" things that came into my head.

Then, on a smaller scale, there's my Nana, a woman of God I look up to. She's been through a lot in her life, and instead of just trying to forget the past, she takes those memories and experiences, and uses it to benefit others. It must be a painful process, especially at first. But it's beautiful.

"You make beautiful things out of us." Out of us sinners, out of our imperfections, our mistakes, our regrets, our pain.

Beautiful, huh?

Well said...He does make all things beautiful - if we allow Him to.
